Wedding Cake

With so much time to go (about 8 months), I have been thinking about a lot of different things but not having to make any decisions - quite yet.  I have been thinking about the cake lately.  Wedding cakes are expensive - a lot of bakeries start at $3.50/head.  With an estimated 200 people coming to our wedding, that's $700 in cake!  That is A LOT of money!  Some people at the reception won't even take the cake, a lot of others will take it and eat one bite, and then a few will eat their whole serving.  I want the cake to be beautiful but I don't want to spend a fortune on it.  I was hoping for <$500.  Some ideas I've had to save:

  • I am all for getting a smaller tiered cake and then sheet cake for serving, if it will save money.
  • There are a number of local part-time bakers who may be able to make the cake more affordable for us
  • Search HIGH and LOW for a bakery that is more reasonable!  Maybe a newer bakery or a smaller one.
For now, a few pictures of cakes that I've seen and really loved:
